Power Flushing.

We always recommend Power flushing your existing system when connecting a Heat Pump or renewable heat source to your existing pipework. Power flushing cleans the pipework of any debris that has accumulated over the years by forcing water through at high speed. It can also be known as a power clean or jet washing and will help improve the flow rates of water through your system, improving the efficiency as a result. DMS can quote for a power flush while designing and quoting for your Renewable system if required.

Renewable Heat Incentive.

The Government are incentivising Renewable Heat in the same way as they have been doing with Solar Electricity for some time. As with the Feed in Tariff, the funding for each new applicant will decrease over time following quarterly reviews. Now is a great time to take up the opportunity to modernise your heating system while the payments are high. Feed in Tariff.

The Feed in Tariff has been available since 2008 and has helped encourage over 750,000 solar installations in the UK alone. Although the tariff has dropped dramatically over the years, as has the cost of the systems. Solar PV remains a shrewd and safe investment, with quarterly payments over 20 years.

Property – 1970’s 3 bedroom detached 2 storey with cavity walls.

The property.

The house is a 2 story 1970’s built detached villa with already insulated cavity walls, 200mm loft insulation, a log burning stove and a 6 month old gas condensing boiler.

The task.

We were tasked with making the maximum use of renewable energy and making maximum savings and income through efficiency improvements and Government incentives. We were to assess and access any funding available. Our first step was to carry out a full Green Deal Assessment.

The solution.

The first step in the process was a home visit from one of our qualified Energy Assessors to discuss the options available and to assess the suitability for different technologies. We carried out a full Green Deal Assessment to fully understand the energy requirements, and carried out individual room by room heat loss calculations.

Even with some savings having been found from the new condensing gas boiler we did not rule out replacing this equipment.

Solar PV.

The property had a south west facing roof capable of holding a 3.25kW Solar Pv system. Solar PV works hand in hand with an electric powered Heat Pump, providing a truly renewable solution. The South West facing roof is perfect for producing power from noon through to evening. We offered a budget Polycrystalline solution, and a high quality German manufactured Solarworld all black monocrystalline system with an Austrian remote access capable Fronius inverter. The customer chose the premium Solarworld due to the better warranty and more aesthetically pleasing look.

Hybrid Heat Pump.

We looked into heating the property more efficiently using modern technologies. Ground Source Heat Pump and Biomass systems were quickly ruled out due to the nature of the property and the client’s lifestyle. We presented both a Hybrid Heat Pump and a High Temperature Heat Pump solution to utilise the existing radiators as being the most suitable. Having been used to instant hot water and having gas present the customer opted for the Hybrid Heat Pump.

The property was already reasonably well insulated, but we did provide extra cost savings by adding 100mm loft insulation. Insulating under the floor was not possible due to depth, and lifting the floors to install was not practical in this instance. We did replace the clients lighting with a mixture of warm and cold LED lighting to suit the rooms, adding further savings.

The funding.

Property – 1970’s 3 bedroom detached 2 storey with cavity walls.

  1. The customer accessed interest free loans from the Scottish Government to cover 75% of the install cost.

  2. £500 cashback was available from the Scottish Government for the loft insulation and Green Deal Report.

  3. Renewable Heat Incentive payments are due for 7 years on the Heat Pump element of the Hybrid Heat Pump.

  4. Feed In Tariff payments are due for 20 years on the Solar PV system.

The result.

The Daikin Altherma Hybrid Heat Pump produces ample heat and hot water for the property, and the increased hot water flow rate over a condensing combi boiler provided an added bonus to the customer. The Solar panels produce a large percentage of the electricity needs of the property, and gas use is minimal.

The spend on energy is down by over £2,000 per year and the Renewable Heat Incentive and Feed in Tariff payments exceed £1,300 per year. The solution is expected to last in excess of 20 years with regular servicing of the gas boiler.

The total cost of the project was under £14,000 giving a payback period of under 4 years!

Case Study 2.

Insulation & Hybrid Heat Pump.

Property – 1960’s 4 bedroom detached bungalow with cavity walls.

  • Energy Spend £4,000.

  • New energy spend £1,800.

  • 20 year savings £44,000.

  • RHI and FIT income generated over 20 years £8,400.

  • Total 20 year savings £52,400.

The property.

The house is a substantial single story 1960’s built detached bungalow with 3 bathrooms, insulated cavity walls, 100mm loft insulation, a 10 year old gas system boiler and 2 large water tanks for hot water. One of the bathrooms had a double sized bath.

The task.

We were tasked with making the maximum return of investment and reducing bills as much as possible. We carried out a full Green Deal Assessment and had a technical survey carried out by one of our heating engineers as water flow rate was going to be crucial.

The solution.

The first step in the process was a home visit from one of our qualified Energy Assessors to discuss the options available and to assess the suitability for different technologies. We carried out a full Green Deal Assessment to fully understand the energy requirements, and carried out individual room by room heat loss calculations. We carefully assessed the current hot water supply in order to provide comparisons of different technologies.

The primary focus of the project was the heating and hot water solution.

Hybrid Heat Pump.

We looked into heating the property more efficiently using modern technologies. Ground Source Heat Pump and Biomass systems were quickly ruled out due to the nature of the property and the client’s preferences. We presented both a Hybrid Heat Pump and a High Temperature Heat Pump solution to utilise the existing radiators as being the most suitable. The Daikin Altherma Hybrid heat pump does produce a comparatively high hot water flow rate, and it is constant – on demand. The High Temperature Daikin Altherma Heat Pump has good hot water recovery times, but with such unusually high peak demand and the bath holding such a large volume of water and potential for 2 more bathrooms to be in use the cost of storing sufficient hot water started to rise. The customer opted for the endless but slightly lower flow rate from the Hybrid system as being more convenient.

Insulation.

The property was already insulated to an extent, but we did provide extra cost savings by adding 200mm loft insulation with good access under the floor we carried out full under floor insulation to the property with the exception of 1 room. The customer will notice less draughts and warmer rooms as a result.

The funding.

  1. The customer accessed interest free loans from the Scottish Government to cover 75% of the install cost for the renewables and the insulation.

  2. Renewable Heat Incentive payments are due for 7 years on the Heat Pump element of the Hybrid Heat Pump.

The result.

As part of our service we examined the customers energy bills, and identified immediate savings to be made by changing supplier. Although we can not change supplier, our Energy Assessors look for savings and recommendations from every angle.

The spend on energy is down by over £2,200 per year and the Renewable Heat Incentive payments exceed £1,200 per year. The solution is expected to last in excess of 20 years with regular servicing of the gas boiler.

The total cost of the project was under £11,000 giving a payback period of just over 3 years!
