As with any heating system, the Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan Heat Pump works best in properties with high levels of thermal efficiency. Wherever possible, property owners, be they private or commercial, should look into cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, double glazing, and other thermal efficiency improvements.
Ecodan heating systems use heat pump technology to provide heating and hot water supply wherever required. The heat pumps only require a small amount of energy input to gather, upgrade, and move heat from one location for distribution in another.
This is achieved through a vapour compression cycle, which has the ability to move heat from one space to another. The efficiency of a heat pump is known as the coefficient of performance or COP; this is the ratio of the heat deliver to power consumed to deliver said heat.
This technology is similar to how a modern refrigerator works, which also uses the vapour compression cycle. The main components of an air source heat pump are the compression, the expansion valve, and two heat exchangers – an evaporator and a condenser.
Compression – Refrigerant vapour is raised in pressure and therefore temperature.
Condensing – This hot pressurised refrigerant vapour is then passed through a condenser, where it liquefies and gives off useable heat that can be delivered to a building by either air or water.
Expansion – Liquid refrigerant is then allowed to expand, which lowers its pressure.
Evaporation – The low pressure liquid then expands and absorbs naturally occurring heat from the environment (this can be from the air, water or ground) and in doing so changes back to a vapour, which is then passed to the compressor for the cycle to start again.
The comprehensive small-scale application Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan Heat Pump range is designed to suit a wide number of situations, from a small flat to a six-bedroom house. The Ecodan systems can cater to the varying requirements of both new build and retro fit homes.
The smallest capacity unit in the Ecodan range is the W50. This heat pump is 5kW and is perfect for use in new build applications due to their inherent modern day thermal efficiencies. With the ability to work at variable capacities, the W50 is ideal for many applications: from smaller existing homes or flats to medium sized newly built homes, the W50 can handle them all.
The W85 is currently the most popular in the Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan Heat Pump range, working at 8.5kW. It is also proving to be effective in both new build and existing home applications. Also able to work at variable capacities, the W85 offers the widest scope in terms of applications.

Designed specifically with large scale applications in mind, the Ecodan CAHV air source heat pump monobloc system can either operate as a single unit or form part of a multiple unit system. The CAHV comes with a variety of different controller features as standard.
A Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan CAHV Heat Pump multiple unit system has the ability to cascade available units on and off to meet the load from a building. As an example of this modulation, a system made of 16 units allows for 0.5kW increments of capacity, from 18kW all the way up to an impressive 688kW.
