Reflective foil insulation is commonly made from several layers of aluminium foil combined with soft wadding. This combination also traps air, an effective thermal insulator. The main purpose of the aluminium foil insulation is to reflect radiant heat; the aluminium foil insulation is a modern alternative to traditional insulative materials such as fibreglass, which is not as effective.
Foil insulation can reduce the radiant heat transfer by up to 97%, making it one of the most effective insulation materials available on the commercial market. It is important to note, however, that there are different variations of foil insulation with different material compositions. Buyers should always check that they purchase the right foil insulation for the purpose at hand and that meets the specific building requirements.
Foil insulation, most commonly aluminium foil insulation, can trace its history back to the early 20th century. It wasn’t until the advent of the US/USSR space race, however, that serious research and advances into aluminium foil insulation technology was made. The foundation for foil insulation was laid by NASA for helping their space program when they looked for ways to regulate temperatures within sub orbital, orbital, and interstellar space craft to create an inhabitable environment for their astronauts.
Traditional insulation was unsuitable for the task as it required a thickness that was simply unrealistic on a spacecraft that had to combat gravity. The solution was foil insulation – a simple, multi-layered application of aluminium foil that was both highly insulative and lightweight. As with most material advances, other applications (mostly commercial) were quickly discovered, and the market for home foil insulation was born. Foil insulation has since become a firm favourite for cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, and underfloor insulation.
Foil Insulation is made up of multiple sheets of metallised film that are separated by an insulating cote. Aluminium is the most common material used for the metallised film, whereas the material that manufacturers choose for the insulation core is case dependent – some common examples are plastic bubble sheet, non-woven fibrous padding, or plastic foam. The entire construct must be installed with quilt edges and sealed joints in order to be effective as an insulative material.
The main purpose of foil insulation is the same as any other form of insulation – to reduce energy bills and to make a home for comfortable. This happens by preventing heat to escape conditioned spaces, such as a residential home, thus reducing heat loss. Choosing foil insulation as the insulation method for homes is common amongst buyers as foil options tend to be more cost effective than their fibreglass competitors in the long term.
Simply purchasing the correct foil insulation material does not make for a successful installation project. The overall installation must be done in a careful and detailed manner to ensure the best possible results. There are several things to take of prior to starting a foil insulation installation project. The job area must first undergo a careful inspection for any signs of leaks, be they water or air. If a leak is found, it must be sealed. Foil insulation can be installed in a variety of locations, with the most common options being underfloor, wall cavities, and attic/loft spaces. Other common locations for foil insulation installation include crawlspaces and basements.
The rule of thumb for any foil insulation installation is that the installation space must be well ventilated. Air must be able to circulate around and through the foil insulation in order for it to have the desired effect.
For example, one should use ridge vents along roof lines. Two major factors that dictate the approach to the installation of foil insulation are the climate of the location of the building and the intended objectives of the owner. Buyers whose main priority is the reduction of heating bills may opt for foil insulation on top of other insulative measures. This tends to be the preferred method of implementation for mixed-climate locations.

Foil-Tec is a multi-layer foil laminate coated with nitrocellulose to provide a corrosion resistant, highly reflective and robust vapour control layer insulation system. Foil-Tec is a high-performance material which acts by creating a low emissivity air space in the wall or roof, thus reflecting the heat back into the building. Foil-Tec can be applied to enhance ‘U’ values in new build or refurbished building project to meet and exceed current building regulations.
Foil-Tec VSL is applied directly from the roll either vertically and horizontally depending on the wall height, pulled tight, and stapled onto the wall. The foil side of the material should face the adjacent air space. All overlaps and perimeters must be taped and sealed using YBS foil tape. Vertical counter battens, minimum 25mm by 38mm are fixed to wall at 400mm centres. Battens must always be placed at the top and bottom of the wall and around the perimeter of doors and windows.

The foil side of the material should face the adjacent air space. All overlaps and perimeters must be taped and sealed using YBS Foil Tape. If there is no cavity present between the rafters, fix horizontal counter battens, minimum 25mm by 38mm are fixed to the rafter at 600mm centres. Battens must always be placed at the top and bottom of the roof and around perimeter of sky lights/windows.
